Spain and France – 2015

Dorothee and I have traveled to a number of European countries... England, France, Germany, Austria, Czech Republic, Italy.. but have never been to Spain until July 2015.  Our flight was to Barcelona, where we spent several days and met up with our good friends (and fellow worldwide travel companions) Dietmar Panten and Britta Behmer from Munich.  From there it was overland by rental car through southern France, then returning to the Spanish Atlantic coast and then overland back to Barcelona. We loved every minute of the trip, but both agreed that our 4 days in Zaragoza, Spain was definitely the ...

Out of Africa in 15 minutes

In the spring of 2014 Dorothee and I took a trip to South Africa to visit our good friends Roley and Ina Noffke, who live on the outskirts of Johannesburg.  It is a fatiguing trip... 19 hours flight time from Washington D.C. to Johannesburg, including a short fuel stop at Dakar, Senegal. We traveled via air with Roley, Ina, and Ina's 91 year old mother (who was amazingly spry) to Kasane, Botswana, located on the Chobe River, just adjacent to the huge Chobe National Game Park.  Later, we drove by highway to Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe. Ina and Roley were the ...

“Nigel goes to the Movies”

Our classic car collection seems to be getting more and more notoriety from the video and photoshoot communities. During 2013 "General MacArthur" had a cameo role in a new CBS series "Killer Women" (it was the initial episode if anyone is interested), "Cedric" had a nice photoshoot engagement, and will soon be the subject of a Petrolicious(.com) interest story.  If you're a car-person and haven't visited Petrolicious, you should.. as the name implies, there are some gorgeous automotive-related videos and articles. Most recently, "Nigel" our 1959 Jaguar, (as well as yours truly, playing limo driver) had a small role in ...

Shop Talk

Some people find pleasure in a beautiful flower, or tasty dish of food.  While I too can appreciate those things of beauty, it is mechanical objects that  seem to most attract me. Ever since I was a kid I would take great delight in disassembling some object to see what worked inside and then (sometimes successfully)  reassemble it! I do especially like the idea of turning a hunk of raw material into an object of usefulness and/or beauty. Thus you can imagine our excitement when my shopmate Doug and I recently acquired a huge metal milling machine for our automotive ...

A House IS a Home!

During the almost 30 years Dorothee and I have been together, we have lived in 5 different houses. Looking back, however, none of the prior houses we've owned/occupied have every truly felt like OUR home until now. For example, our first house in Hilo came with orange (yes, Denny's ORANGE) wall tile in the kitchen, as well as a huge gawdawful mural painted all across the living room wall, and complemented by a dark cork and mirror tile entry. Moving to our current home in Dripping Springs changed all that. From the moment we set sight on OUR home, we ...
